いあいどうのれきし

 いあいどうは日本にとてもゆめいなれきしです。むかしむかし、人たちの間にいあいどうはたくさん人をしました。今、たくさんいあいどうのえいががあります。でも、あまり人をしません。

The meaning of the word "いあいどう", read Iaido, consists in two, according to the 漢字s that forms the word. The first, 居合, "iai", represents to be psychologically present in the moment, while the second, 道, "dou", to be quick within your actions and movements, or even "the way". Thus, it can be translated as "a way of being quick within your actions and movements, simultaneously to being present in the moment".

Although many may see this activity as dangerous and violent, its performance is much more than that. Is about having focus, techniques, and wisdom, especially when it comes to attacking and defending yourself.  Besides, it also emphasizes the spiritual aspects, associated with the state of mind, and the philosophical aspects, such as those values of Confucianism and Taoism. Additionally, the performance of Iaido is usually one and only, as when practiced alone, one can focus on its own performance, from  control to management of the weapon.

About its history, its assumed that Iaido began during the year 1500 and its practice continued over the following years, even after the Japanese feudal system collapse in 1868. However, it was only in 1932, after its approval and acceptance by the DNBK, Dai Nippon Butoku Kai - the largest Japanese organization of martial arts, that the term Iaido began to be used in the country.
